5 Biggest Reasons Why Your Art Is not Improving

Do you feel stuck with your Animal Portraits?
5 Common Mistakes for Not Moving Forward

Have you ever felt stuck with your art?…

Like no matter how much time you spend drawing, your skills just aren’t improving the way you hoped?

That feeling can be really frustrating.

You’re putting in the effort, showing up, trying your best — and still, it feels like you’re not moving forward.

But here’s something important to remember

Every artist goes through phases like this.

Hitting a plateau doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong — it’s often just a sign that something needs a small shift.

In this post, I’ll share five common reasons why your art might feel stuck — and how you can gently move past them and start growing again

1. LACK OF CONSISTENT PRACTICE

Improvement comes with regular, focused practice. Without dedicating consistent time to drawing, it’s hard to see progress in your skills. Schedule fix drawing time.

Consistency is one of the most important (and most overlooked) parts of improving your art.

Even short, regular sessions will help you build momentum and train your eye over time. It’s not about how long you draw — it’s about how often you come back to it.

Try creating a small routine that feels realistic for you, so drawing becomes a natural part of your week.

2. STAYING IN YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Sticking to familiar techniques or subjects can limit your growth. Challenging yourself with new materials, styles, or more complex compositions can push you to improve.

It’s completely normal to return to subjects or techniques that feel safe.

But real growth happens when you gently step outside of that comfort zone.

You don’t need to overwhelm yourself — even small changes, like trying a new reference or experimenting with a different approach, can make a big difference over time.

3. NOT SEEKING FEEDBACK

It’s difficult to spot areas for improvement on your own. Constructive feedback from others helps identify blind spots and opens up new perspectives on your work.

Sometimes we simply can’t see our own mistakes — and that’s okay.

Getting feedback can feel a little uncomfortable at first, but it’s one of the fastest ways to improve.

A fresh pair of eyes can highlight small things that make a big difference in your drawings.

4. NEGLECTING FUNDAMENTALS

Skipping foundational skills like anatomy, composition, and color theory can prevent you from reaching a higher level of mastery. Revisiting the basics is key to long-term growth.

It can be tempting to jump straight into finished pieces.

But strong fundamentals are what support everything you create.

Spending time on the basics will make your drawings feel more solid, balanced, and realistic — even if it doesn’t feel exciting in the moment.

5. COMPARING TO OTHERS

Use other artists artwork as inspiration, but don’t compare yourself too much with them. Constantly comparing your art to more experienced artists can be discouraging and hinder your progress. Focus on your personal journey and celebrate small improvements over time. Focus on what you have achieved.

It’s so easy to look at other artists and feel like you’re not good enough.

But every artist is on a different path, with different experiences and timelines.

Instead of comparing, try to notice what you’ve already improved.

Even small progress matters more than you think.

Final thought:

Progress in art doesn’t always feel visible.

Sometimes you’re improving quietly — building skills, training your eye, and understanding more than you realize.

Be patient with yourself.

Keep showing up, keep learning, and trust that your progress is happening, even on the slower days
