5 Tips for Drawing the Eyes of Animals Using Pastel Pencils

Simple ways to Bring Animal Eyes to Life

Have you ever spent a long time drawing an eye… and still felt like it didn’t quite look alive?

When you are drawing animals with pastel pencils, the eyes are often the most important part.

They are what give your animal portrait expression, personality, and emotion.

And usually, it’s not one big thing that makes an eye look realistic — it’s a few small details working together.

Today I want to share a few simple tips that can help you create more realistic animal eyes when drawing animals with pastel pencils

1. MAKE SURE YOUR PROPORTIONS / OUTLINES ARE CORRECT

Start by sketching accurate proportions and outlines, paying close attention to the size and placement of the iris, pupil, and eyelid for a lifelike foundation.

Taking a little extra time in the beginning makes everything easier later.

If the basic shape is right, the whole eye will already feel much more natural.

2. BRING IN SHADOWS AND LIGHTS

Incorporate shadows and lights to create depth, using darker tones for shadow areas and lighter tones for highlights, ensuring smooth transitions for a three-dimensional effect.

Without shadows and light, the eye can quickly look flat.

Even a small shadow under the eyelid can make a big difference.

3. DARKEN DOWN THE EDGES OF THE IRIS

Darken the outer rim of the iris to enhance its rounded appearance, blending it subtly into the lighter areas to add depth and realism.

This is one of those little details that instantly makes the eye look more realistic.

It helps create that soft, rounded shape we see in real animal eyes.

4. FOCUS ON HIGHLIGHTS / LIGHT REFLECTIONS

Add highlights and light reflections using a white pencil or eraser, paying attention to their shape and placement to give the eye a glossy, lifelike look. Sometimes you see clouds, the sky, trees,….

The highlights are what make the eye come alive.

Try to really observe your reference photo — often you can see tiny reflections that make the eye unique and interesting.

5. ADD DETAILS

Include fine details such as the texture of the iris, fine lines lines, dots and don’t forget to draw shadows of the eye lashes in the light reflections.

These small details are often what create that final realistic effect.

They don’t need to be perfect — just gently suggested.

Final thought:

When drawing animals with pastel pencils, realistic eyes begin with correct proportions, become more lifelike through shadows and lights, gain depth with a darker iris edge, sparkle through highlights, and finally come alive with small details
