Weekly Art Tip – Draw What You See, Not What You Think You See

DRAW WHAT YOU SEE,

NOT WHAT YOU THINK YOU SEE

Today, I have a tip for you on how to improve your animal portraits.

I always teach my students in the Animal Art Club that they should draw what they see. Carefully observing your reference photo is crucial. It’s important to study your reference image thoroughly.

Identify the shapes you see, determine the colors, and observe where the light and dark areas are. What are the angles of the lines? In what direction does the fur grow?

Take the time to observe and study your reference photo before you start drawing. What shades do you notice? Where are the highlights, and where are the shadows? This approach will make your results much more realistic.
