Weekly Art Tip – 5 Tips for Drawing Outlines and Sketches
5 FOR DRAWING OUTLINES AND SKETCHES

1. Freehand drawing
Practice makes perfect! Drawing freehand not only sharpens your skills but also trains your eyes to capture details and proportion. It’s a great way to develop your unique style.

2. Tracing paper method
Print out your reference photo, place tracing paper over it, and use a graphite pencil to trace the most important lines. Then, transfer these outlines onto your drawing surface for a clean start.

3. Using helping lines or a grid
Avoid placing heavy object on stored pastel portraits to prevent damage. Keep the storage area organized and use dividers for multiple pieces.

4. Pastel pigment on the reference photo
Apply pastel pigment to the back of your printed reference photo. Place it onto your drawing paper and trace the outlines with a hard graphite pencil. The pigment transfer to your paper, leaving you with clean outlines to work from.

5. Projectors
If you have the budget, a projector can be a fantastic tool to quickly and easily project your reference image onto your drawing surface, allowing you to trace the outlines with ease.
