Weekly Art Tip – Avoid Grid or Smudge with the Right Amount of Pastel Pigment Use

AVOID GRID OR SMUDGE WITH THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF PASTEL PIGMENT USE

When working with pastels, it’s easy to either apply too much pigment, which can cause smudging, or too little, which might leave visible paper grids. 🤔
Check out my tips below, and you’ll achieve a smooth, clean result every time! 💯

1. Start light

Applying too little pastel can reveal paper grids and disrupt smoothness. use gentle strokes to apply light layers, building up gradually for even coverage.

2. Control pressure

Excess pigment can lead to smudging and loss of detail. Apply with minimal pressure to maintain control and test your technique on modeling dough.

3. Blend well

A soft, even base layer is key to a clean foundation. Blend it well with a paper stump, pressing pigment into the paper and removing any excess.

4. Layer gradually

Add pastel layers slowly to create depth and texture without overloading. Work gently to keep your application controlled and finish polished.

5. Practice precision

Refining pastel technique takes practice and patience. Use modeling dough to perfect pressure, aiming for smooth strokes without deep marks.
