5 TIPS ON HOW TO BLEND PASTELS

Blending is key to creating smooth transitions and soft, realistic effects in pastel drawings. But blending too much can make colors look muddy or flat. Here are five tips to help you blend pastels like a pro! 🤩
Try blending with different tools and techniques to see what works best for your style! 🥳

1. Use the Right Paper for Better Blending

Not all papers handle blending well! Textured pastel paper holds layers and vibrancy, while smooth paper can cause dull over-blending.

2. Layer Lightly & Avoid Over-Blending

Apply pastels in thin layers and blend gently. Over-blending removes texture, so keep some areas textured for a natural look.

3. Use Your Fingers, Sponges, or Brushes Wisely

Different tools create different blending effects. Use stumps for details, sponges for smooth transitions, and fingers for backgrounds but watch for oil.

4. Blend Colors in the Right Order

Always blend lighter areas first to avoid dragging darker pigments into them. If a color gets too muddy, gently remove some pastel with a kneaded eraser before adding a new layer.

5. Fix Harsh Edges Without Losing Detail

Lightly blend harsh edges with a sponge or finger, but keep some crisp strokes for detail. Sharp edges add realism and contrast.
