Weekly Art Tip 5 Tips on Building Layers and Working Slowly

5 TIPS ON BUILDING LAYERS AND WORKING SLOWLY

Rushing into thick color can flatten your portrait. Slow, steady layering brings depth, detail, and realism to your pastel animal artwork. Here’s why it works—and how to do it well! 🤩
Happy drawing!

1. Start With Light, Thin Layers

Begin with a loose base to block in shapes and values. Don’t press too hard—this first layer is just your foundation.

2. Build Up Color Gradually

Add more pigment with each layer, adjusting tones and shadows slowly. This gives your work a natural, glowing quality.

3. Use the Paper’s Texture

Textured paper holds more pastel. Working in layers helps you “fill” the tooth gradually instead of clogging it too early.

4. Let Colors Interact

Layering soft strokes of different hues creates subtle color shifts and depth that a single thick layer can’t achieve.

5. Pause Between Layers

Step back often. Slowing down lets you see what’s working—and keeps you from overworking areas too soon.
