6 TIPS FOR DRAWING ANIMAL NOSES AND WHISKERS

1. Observe Shape and Structure
Study your reference closely—every nose is unique in shape, angle, and texture. Look for subtle curves and nostril placement.

2. Build the Nose with Soft Layers
Start with light pressure and gradually deepen the values. This helps create form without flattening the nose.

3. Use Highlights for a Wet Look
A small white highlight can suggest moisture. Place it carefully where light naturally hits the nose—usually off-center or near the top.

4. Draw Whiskers with Confidence
Use smooth, curved lines drawn in one stroke. Wobbly whiskers look unnatural, so relax your hand and draw with flow.

5. Choose the Right Tool
Use a pastel pencil or sharp white pastel stick for clean, bright whiskers. You can also lift them out with a fine-tipped eraser.

6. Don’t Add Too Many
Just a few well-placed whiskers will do the job. Avoid adding extras—they can clutter the face and distract from the expression.
