Weekly Art Tip 5 Tips for Sharpening and Caring for Pastel Pencils

5 TIPS FOR SHARPENING AND CARING FOR PASTEL PENCILS

Pastel pencils are one of the best tools for adding fine details, soft textures, and sharp edges to your animal portraits—but they can also be notoriously fragile. Few things are more frustrating than watching your favorite pencil crumble just when you need it most. ✏️
The good news is, with the right sharpening methods and a little extra care, you can make your pencils last longer, stay sharp, and be ready whenever inspiration strikes. Whether you’re refining whiskers, adding catchlights to eyes, or defining fur textures, a well-kept pastel pencil makes all the difference. 🐾
This week, I’ve put together 5 tips to help you sharpen and care for your pastel pencils—so you can spend more time drawing and less time dealing with broken leads. Enjoy!🎨✨

1. Use a Craft Knife, Not a Sharpener

Gently shave away the wood with a craft knife instead of twisting in a sharpener—it reduces snapping.

2. Sand the Tip

After shaping with a knife, use fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding block to get a precise point.

3. Rotate While Sharpening

Turn the pencil slowly as you cut or sand to keep the tip even and avoid uneven pressure.

4. Store Them Safely

Keep pencils in a padded case to prevent accidental drops and breakage.

5. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Heat can soften the pastel core, and cold can make it brittle—store them in a stable environment.
