Weekly Art Tip – 6 Tips For When And How To Use Fixative

6 TIPS FOR WHEN AND HOW TO USE FIXATIVE

Fixative is one of those tools that many pastel artists feel unsure about—and for good reason. While it can help lock layers in place, it also has the power to darken colors, flatten textures, or change the overall look of your drawing. That’s why I usually recommend avoiding it unless it’s truly necessary. 🎨
That said, there are times when fixative can be useful—like when you need to add extra layers, protect a delicate stage of your work, or reduce smudging. The key is knowing when (and how) to apply it so that it supports your drawing instead of harming it. 🌟
This week, I’ll share 6 tips for using fixative wisely—so you can make informed choices, keep your colors vibrant, and understand exactly what to expect if you decide to use it. 🐾✨

1. Know Why You’re Using It

Only use fixative to lightly hold layers before adding more—not as a final seal for your artwork.

2. Test On A Scrap First

Always spray on a test piece to see how the colors and texture react.

3. Use Light, Even Layers

Hold the can 12–18 inches away and apply a gentle mist—avoid soaking the paper.

4. Ventilate Your Space

Always spray outdoors or in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.

5. Expect Slight Color Changes

Fixative can darken pastels or shift tones slightly, so plan for that in your layering.

6. Skip It For Final Pieces

For finished art, framing under glass without fixative is often the best way to protect your work.
