Weekly Art Tip – 5 Tips For Drawing Expressive Animal Eyes
5 TIPS FOR DRAWING EXPRESSIVE ANIMAL EYES
Expressive eyes make your animal portraits come alive. They hold emotion, personality, and connection—and without them, even a strong drawing can feel flat.
1. Study The Reference Closely
Look for subtle shapes in the iris, reflection patterns, and eyelid curves before you start.

2. Layer Colors For Depth
Don’t just use black or brown—mix in blues, greens, or warm tones to add richness and dimension.

3. Darken The Edges
A slightly darker outline around the iris helps define the shape and make the eye stand out.

4. Place Highlights Carefully
Check where the light hits in your reference and add a clean highlight—this gives the eye its sparkle.

5. Blend, But Keep Sharp Details
Softly blend within the eye, but keep the pupil and highlight crisp for contrast.
