Weekly Art Tip – 5 Tips for Building Depth with Overlapping Shapes
5 TIPS FOR BUILDING DEPTH WITH OVERLAPPING SHAPES

1. Plan Your Overlaps Early
During the sketching stage, lightly map where parts of the animal will overlap—like the muzzle over the chest or a leg in front of the body. This sets up a clear visual hierarchy.

2. Vary Your Edges
Use sharper edges for the areas in front and softer, slightly blended edges for the ones behind. This subtle contrast creates natural depth..

3. Use Value and Contrast
Add stronger contrasts and slightly darker shadows where one shape overlaps another. The edge of that shadow helps define the separation.

4. Layer with Purpose
When applying pastel, work from the back layers forward. Building lighter, detailed strokes on top of darker or softer layers reinforces a sense of order and space.

5. Guide the Viewer’s Eye
Think about how overlaps lead the eye through the composition. Strategic overlaps create flow and prevent your drawing from feeling flat or disconnected.
