Weekly Art Tip – 7 Quick Fixes For Common Proportion Mistakes
7 QUICK FIXES FOR COMMON PROPORTION MISTAKES

1. Use The Pencil-Measuring Trick
Hold your pastel pencil at arm’s length and compare angles or lengths directly to the reference — it’s fast and surprisingly accurate.

2. Mirror Your Work (Flip It Horizontally)
Either photograph and flip it digitally or hold it up to a mirror to spot uneven features instantly.

3. Check Relationships, Not Isolated Parts
Instead of asking “Is the eye right?”, check “How far is it from the ear? The nose? The corner of the mouth?”

4. Simplify The Animal Into Basic Shapes
If something looks off, redraw the head, body, or paws as circles and ovals to reset proportions quickly.

5. Compare Width Vs. Height
Often we get one dimension right and the other wrong — double-check both for accuracy.

6. Don’t Be Afraid To Erase And Redraw
A gentle kneaded eraser lift and a fresh sketch line can fix most proportion issues without damaging the paper.
.

7. Step Back For A Fresh Look
Distance makes proportion errors jump out instantly — use it often.
