5 Tips How to Bring in More Contrast Into Your Pastel Portraits

1. Focus on values
Make sure to use the full range of values in your portraits from the darkest to the lightest lights. This helps create depth and dimension making your portraits more dynamic and lifelike.

2. Lights and shadow
Emphasize light and shadow in your work, highlighting natural light on your subject and deepening shadows to enhance contrast. This adds a three-dimensional effect.

3. No hard edges
Defining same edges is crucial for contrast, but avoid overusing hand edges. Blend softly in natural transitions for a realistic, cohesive look.

4. Color contrast
Utilize color contrast to make certain elements stand out. Complementary colors (such as blue and orange, or red and green) can create striking contrasts that draw attention to key features of your portraits.

5. Background and foreground contrast
Create a distinct separation between the subject and background with a contrasting color to make the subject pop. This enhances impact and focuses attention.
