Weekly Art Tip – 7 Tips for Drawing Fine Detailed Fur
7 TIPS FOR DRAWING FINE DETAILED FUR

1. Choose the right paper
Select a textured paper like sanded pastel or velour paper for layering pastel. In my opinion, Pastelmat Paper from Clairefontaine is the best pastel paper.

2. Start with an underpainting
Begin with an underpainting using pastel pencils or soft pastels in mid-tones. Blend well to avoid saturating the paper and to set the foundation.

3. Work in layers
Build up fur in layers, starting dark and adding lighter tones. Use short strokes to mimic fur direction, enhancing depth and realism.

4. Pressure is the key
Don’t apply too much pressure, when you are drawing your lines. Work with a light hand to achieve fine fur hairs.

5. Use sharp pencils
Keep your pastel pencils sharp to draw precise lines and intricate details. Experiment with different sharpening techniques to find what works best for you.

6. Rotate your pencil
Turn your pastel pencil around, while you are drawing to use all edges of the lead, That help keep your pencil sharp longer.

7. Blend carefully
Blend lightly with a stump or finger to soften edges where needed. Avoid over-blending to maintain detail clarity, focus on crispness in top layers after blending base layers.
